Meanings and Messages: Demonstration / workshop with jeweller Deborah Beck

Have you ever tried plastic-smithing? Join Deborah Beck to create your own recycled artwork using discarded single-use plastics.

Join Jeweller and ACJ member Deborah Beck in the gallery for a demonstration and drop-in workshop from 2pm - 4pm to learn how to make your own recycled creations, transforming discarded single-use plastics.

Deborah’s jewellery combines her environmental concerns with her silver and plastic-smithing skills to create sustainable wearable art, from recycled metals and discarded waste materials. Collecting single-use plastic litter which she finds on her daily walks along the river, she recycles them entirely by hand in her home studio, creating her own repurposed raw material which she refines and sets in recycled silver structures. Her work elevates the un-wanted into high-end contemporary jewellery without the high cost to the earth.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to see and feel samples of Deborah’s innovative plastic smithing before having a go at making a small artwork or a sample with repurposed plastics.

If you have any clean plastic bottle tops you have collected at home, please feel free to bring them with you on the day.

Cluster Jewellery Fair 2022
Dec

to 11 Dec

Cluster Jewellery Fair 2022

Excited to share our 3rd Contemporary Jewellery Fair, coming this winter.
The fair will showcase the freshest and most forward thinking young designers.

Jewellery has historically been adopted as a symbol of power by both political and religious elites; think of the precious jewels of the Vatican, originally commissioned for the Pope Pius IVV by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804 in exchange for his attendance at his own self-coronation. There are many such examples throughout history where jewels were used as expressions of hierarchy, instead of representing unity and equality.

This year’s Cluster Contemporary Jewellery fair, entitled “Sentient” continues with the mission of previous fairs to support and showcase the work of experimental jewellery makers, delving even deeper into materiality and concept. The fair’s mission is to abolish the still persisting association with jewellery as a token of exclusivity, luxury and assertion of power. Instead, we want to embrace another, much deeper and more authentic purpose of jewels and other bodily adornments as spiritual talismans that connect the individual to their community and to a higher knowledge.

These tokenistic objects were often humble, found objects with a profound and meaningful personal connection to the individual wearing them on their body, used as powerful spiritual conduits allowing access to a higher Self and elevating the single mind into the collective. It’s closely related to the movement of animism, which believes that everything on this earth, including people, animals and even nonanimate objects carry a distinct spiritual essence. Instead of focusing on some external divine power, it celebrates the intrinsic essence already living within everything that exists, believing in the ability to channel it through talismans. A crucial aspect of animism is that unlike other forms of religion, it rejects the notion of strict hierarchies and assigns agency and spirit to all living and nonliving things.

The Welbeck Winter Weekend

to 27 Nov

The Welbeck Winter Weekend

Start your countdown to Christmas by spending a day soaking up the Christmas atmosphere with mulled wine and festive food while shopping for handmade gifts at the 2022 Welbeck Winter Weekend.

NEW FOR 2022 – a brand NEW location
Welbeck Winter Weekend is set to return this November and will take place within Welbeck’s Grand Victorian

Hunting Stables for the first time.

Between 25th - 27th November 2022, art and food stalls will fill the large 19th-century building enabling visitors to explore a fine selection of local artisan produce within the large courtyard that once housed the 96 horses that belonged to Welbeck Abbey. The structure formed part of the 5th Duke of Portland’s ambitious building works that included the creation of Welbeck Village.

The Welbeck Winter Weekend is known for celebrating all things handmade, and this year will be no exception. Visitors can buy handcrafted pieces created by various artists and makers brought together by The Harley Gallery. There will also be the opportunity to explore the artists’ workspaces within the nearby Harley Studios. Visitors will also discover stall upon stall of fine local food and drink selected by Welbeck Farm Shop.

Perfect backdrop

Nicola Brown, Event Organiser, said:

“It’s fantastic to bring this popular annual event back to Welbeck, and plans are forging ahead. More excitingly, we have a new venue for the event, as we plan to open up the Grand Victorian Hunting Stables, offering a beautiful and atmospheric backdrop.

The Grand Hunting Stables have a cobbled courtyard surrounded by 96 horse boxes, all entirely unchanged from when initially constructed in 1862. The building is a testament to the 5th Duke of Portland’s architectural and artistic ambitions and provides the perfect backdrop for contemporary artists, makers and designers.”

Parking arrangements will be different too this year, as the team looks at improving the visitor experience. A new pre-booking system for the event with a small entrance fee is now in place. Tickets are now on sale and are available to purchase at www.welbeck.co.uk.

Meanings And Messages Touring Exhibition - ACJ

To celebrate our 25th anniversary this year, the ACJ is organising a major show of excellence, touring several venues throughout the UK in 2022. The exhibition is titled Meanings & Messages.

The exhibition will showcase an exciting and varied collection of up to 50 unique brooches portraying a range of meanings and messages.

We have chosen to focus on brooches for this exhibition, as they form the ideal jewellery archetype for conveying meanings and messages. Brooches can be subversive and are often used by people in the public eye, by political figures or sovereignty to convey important messages. These messages may be hidden, subtle or occasionally more of an overt protest!

The exhibition will tour to the following 5 venues and partnerships. We hope to announce a 6th venue very soon!

  • St Georges Arts Centre - Gravesham Borough Council - in partnership with LV21 – 30 April – 29 May 2022

  • Exeter University – Conference Pop Up exhibition - 1 - 3 July 2022

  • Vittoria Street Gallery – Birmingham School of Jewellery – 19 September – 28 October 2022

  • Mission Gallery in partnership with Swansea College of Art UWTSD – 16 November – 21 December 2022

  • The Goldsmiths' Centre - 9 January – 24 February 2023

  • New Brewery Arts – 4 April – 18 June 2023

Our selection panel, who chose the work this year were -

  • Melanie Eddy – Designer, Educator and ACJ Director

  • Dairu Han - BA student at Birmingham School of Jewellery

  • John Moore – Artist

  • Debika Ray – Contributing editor to Crafts magazine

  • Rebecca Van Rooijen – Co-Founder and Editor at Benchpeg Ltd

We are also delighted to have The Crafts Council as our education sponsor for this exhibition, joining us for our season of participatory events in our 25th anniversary year! Their support will enable us to offer an enriched education offer, sharing a digital toolkit of craft resources with our partnering venues across the UK.
